Teddy

Last Sunday we took Ada to a meetup of the SF Havanese.

There were about 25 dogs in attendance...

....including Ada's littermate Teddy.

As puppies Ada (left) and Teddy (right) looked nearly identical...

...and as you can see...

...not much has changed except hair-dos.

Teddy has amazingly soft and fluffy hair, which has inspired me to try growing Ada's out a little longer.

Still Here?

We are, and so is Ada.  Just not posting as much because there are fewer new things to post about.

Ada’s still chewing on things.

Mucky Pup!

Ada has been hiking with us before.  And while she has got pretty messy in the past–rolling around in leaves and what-not–I don’t think either of us fully anticipated her reaction to walking in the forests of Northern Washington.

It was quite damp in the forest and raining intermittently.  This meant that Ada quickly became rather bedraggled.  For some reason, unbeknownst to us, she would stop every 100m or so and either lie down or roll her face in the floor.  This in turn caused her hair to become full of sticks and leaves, which would make her roll around more as she tried to get them off her.  Not the smartest of pups, it would seem.

1. Lie down or roll.
2. Pick out the big bits.
3. Keep on picking.
4. Try again.

Needless to say, we cut the walk short.  But by the end of it we managed to keep her walking straight by giving her with treats every 30-seconds or so.

Beach Pup

Ada loves the beach.  So when we started planning a get together with friends at a beach house near Sequim, Washington, there was no question that Ada would join us.

Hiker Pup

Today Ada and I hiked the Wolf Ridge Loop in the Marin Headlands. At 4.3 miles, it’s a pretty long hike for her, so I ended up carrying her about half the time and stopping often for water and treat breaks. I highly recommend it for a short dog-hike because:

  1. dogs can be off leash for the whole loop,
  2. the trails are wide and often paved (if your dog tends to get debris in her hair), and
  3. it’s sunny but not too hot because of the cool wind off the ocean.

As recommended in the Bay Area Hiker guide, we stopped for lunch at the high point where Wolf Ridge Trail meet the Costal Trail and I snapped this photo.

It took a lot of combing and a lot of soap to get all that dirt and debris out of her fur. And she still has brown feet.

Curiosity

[More recovered photos and videos.]

Ada is ridiculously curious and it can be really fun trying to see the world through her eyes.

Here she watches Dan set up this shot; moments later scampering over to investigate properly.

What is he up to?

And here is an endearing little “sniff, sniff” of the camera from earlier that day.

Sigh. I miss my puppy. Just one more sleep until we pick her up!

Ada and Peanut

We haven’t seen Ada play with other dogs like this.

Ada’s breeders were at this week’s Havanese meetup. They brought Dexter, Ada’s brother, and Peanut, who was born 3-days before from a different mother. Dexter wasn’t very sociable, but Ada and Peanut got on like a house-on-fire.

We’re leaving for England on Thursday and Ada’s staying with the breeders. After seeing Ada and Peanut play, Tessa’s feeling much more comfortable with leaving her little pup.

Havanese Meetup

Thanks to the Havanese Flickr Pool we found out about a Havanese Meetup that happens every Sunday in San Francisco. This week we met at Ocean Beach and there was a great turn out — about 15 Havanese in a full range of colors, sizes, and ages (though Ada was the youngest).

So many fluffy doggies!

So many fluffy doggies!

It was really fun to see Ada prance around and play with all the other dogs. The Havanese have a unique low key but bouncy temperament and Ada really looked much more comfortable and confident with this group than she has with other dogs (who either ignore her or overwhelm her).

Ada is front center stiffing (hopefully not eating) sand.

The humans were also really nice - offering advise and reminiscing about when their dogs were puppies.

Although Ada needed a serious bath afterward, I think this meetup will be a regular event for us. So fun!
